"I'm personally not against the death penalty, but I never actually believed it to be an administration of justice either. Justice itself is subjective in the way that every person has their own set of moral standards and biases- exactly why every person has a different opinion on the subject. But taking it down to the base concept of human rights, what gives a human the right to determine the value of another human life or when a person loses it? Even if someone took the life of another, that doesn't necessarily give anyone else the right or authority to take their life. It's not a right, but an assumption we act on. Personal bias is what tips the scale of whether you perceive the action as justice or not. However, no matter how you sugar coat it as due retribution or justice, in the end it's still a human taking another human life. I think everyone should acknowledge that, and that's especially true if you're personally involved in the process."

"The Death Penalty, like abortion, is kind of a rough topic to discuss.
For Con I say what if the person who was killed is actually innocent, and the actual criminal has long since fled the country (just an example)?
How does the death penalty affect families? Relatives of the person put to death may feel the need to seek revenge for what the government did to their loved one. I'm just a student and this is just my opinion.
For Pro, I say these criminals did horrible things and need to be punished for what they've done. "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,..." But putting somebody to death for their crimes is still murder. This is a tough topic and my class and I have to debate on this subject.
The sixth Commandment is "Thou shall not kill".
My dad is in the Military and wholeheartedly supports the death penalty."

"The death penalty is necessary because "citizens should fear our justice system". With this fear, potential criminals would think twice about committing a capital crime such as murder, and thus it can control murder rates and keep them low. It is also cheaper to use the death penalty for a capital crime as opposed to life in prison with no chance of parole.
Also, as said in the Bible, an eye for an eye. If one has killed someone, then he shall be killed, too. Also, it would make up for having terminated the innocent victim's life, and their grieving family would feel as if justice has been brought to them. The death penalty is necessary in the United States, and it should not be banned."

"If someone kills because of anger, grief, religion, racism, or sexism they shouldn't be able to live. They took the life of A CHILD, A HUSBAND, A BROTHER/SISTER, or A PARENT. Seriously!!!!!!! The reason the world is full of murderers, rapist, sex offenders, Etc.Is because we are afraid to punish someone for the wrongs they have done. Even in the Bible it states in Mathew 5:21 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.'" This states that he/she who kills shall be killed for their punishment. The Death Penalty is a must in a world that has major criminals running rampant in the streets because a bunch of people thought that they should get a second chance. Think about the victims families. What do you think goes through their heads when they see that the convict who killed or raped their family member is going to be out in 25 years. What if he/she strikes again when he/she gets out??
Thanks for reading now have a nice day."

Why should some animal have any rights, at all? Because they are human? No they are not. They gave that up. So I should pay taxes to keep them alive? HAH! Why in the F should I? They are scum just like the people on the side of the criminal. Which you should be put in the woodchipper along with them. Do you have any idea of how much money this crap costs the country? Lets protect the monsters...yay! Or even lets put them in jail for life, eating the food the victims should eat and staying warm. Great justice you have there. We need to put these scum out in public and just beat them to death. Use them as fertilizer and help things grow, something productive at least. They aren't people, what is wrong with you? You bring up god all the time with this and that is just a crutch, oh they will be punished by god, so we should pay for it here and now? Forever? NO! The incidents stated above will be reduced largely because the fear of death is the most severe fear.

Killing a dangerous person is better than letting him and others harm and kill people

Mostly murderers and sexual exploiters do their deeds repeatedly. We have noticed they do the same crime after getting released from the prison."

"The death penalty is something we have to convince ourselves that killing someone is just a penalty. A penalty is something you get when you turn an assignment in late, a ticket you get when you're speeding, a penalty is temporary. But death is permanent. At first I was conflicted about which side I was on: For the death penalty or against. One reason why I was for the death penalty was because some people who commit murder might think of death as a reward and killing them instantly might be letting them off easy and it might be less unfair then letting them spend their life in prison. But if we killed someone then they could never learn their lesson that killing someone was wrong if we just killed them in the end. Another argument that people make for that side is that it is more expensive the kill someone for a couple minutes then to keep them in prison for life, but frankly I rather focus on the more humane arguments to this topic which makes me quite a hypocrite, I know, but I'm undecided so I get a pass."

"This is insane. How barbaric are we to let monsters prey on more victims? It is inhuman to keep monsters in cages, feeding them precious food that could be given to 'less lethal' inmates, or even better, children struggling to keep afloat above the shouting and chaos of life's demand. Are we just as guilty letting some monster live, while an innocent child, maybe even a whole family, awaits six feet underground, hoping for someone to redeem what has been done to them. As said a long time ago, "An eye for an eye." It doesn't mean that rape is answered with rape, but the same thought trails behind it. If I were to be completely honest, this practice is a bit barbaric, but it is something that would be a drain on our economy if removed from today's society. Thank you, and have a wonderful day, everyone!"

So many death row inmates sit in prison for years and years after being sentenced to death, some pretty much serve "Life sentences" anyways. I feel that they waste just as much money as life sentence offenders anyways, therefore the execution date should be set a week after their trial, there should be no doubt this person committed the crime he was tried for, and he/she should be executed within 30-90 days of prosecution. Capital punishments are only applied to various types of murder, espionage, treason, and genocide. But I feel that serious sexual offenses should be added to this list as well. (rape and molestation of a child, serial rapists, etc.)"

I get that violence doesn't solve this situation, because people hold grudges, but if they didn't want this as their "fate" then they shouldn't have done what they did. Murder is against the laws for a reason. They should have thought about that before they took someone else's life. So once it's done, the asshole who did it can't move his ass to do it again anymore. No problems for the guards, no problems for the society and victims family are satisfied (not chicken families)"

"To me I was very indecisive about if death penalty is good or not. I happen to be writing an argumentative essay for school about death penalty. I think it's good because it's almost like an "eye for an eye" situation. For example, their was a story about a father that threw his child off of a bridge and then jumped. The father survived but not the child. The father went to prison and didn't get put on death row. Is that fair? That child was not even one and the father lived while the innocent child died. Death Penalty is important to have because if you kill someone on purpose, then why should you still live if you had killed one of the innocents?"

"I do agree our system of punishment is broken. But we have to have some kind of accountability. Is this the answer? Maybe not, but it's what we have right now. I do believe if you are beyond guilty of taking a life or lives, you should pay for it with yours. Remember people...this is supposed to be a deterrent as well as punishment. I do not agree however a person found guilty lingering at tax payers expense for 18+ years. I think the sentence should be swiftly carried out. To let people linger in prison is like saying they were not "really" found guilty so lets tie up the courts for years looking for loopholes and waste tons of time and money. This is not punishment. The people murdered by the people who usually are given a death sentence, were given no chance to linger by their murders. I do believe if our system was changed, and people knew that if you commit a heinous crime that warrants a death penalty, you will die by the end of the week...some may just chose a different path. Is an eye for an eye the answer? Maybe not anymore. I do believe that is because there is no fear of consequence. Most criminals know they will live a lifetime in a prison...eating...working...LIVING. Take that away and the class starts behaving better"

Why should he be able to live when he took a life and took so much away from my family? We are paying for him to be alive and eat and have heat and air. I dont want to pay for his low life self to have a "good" life. I would rather him be dead, but i wouldnt want it to be fast and it go by and him not feel a thing. I think that how ever you kill someone that the same should be done to you so you can see what it is like to be beat to death to be raped and then killed or how ever the victim was killed for the person who did it to have to go through the same thing to feel the pain, to have the scared feeling to not know what is going to happen next."

Taxpayers should not pay for murderers, serial killers, rapists/murderers to receive good food and excellent medical attention in a good prison to live out their days. They took away something that one's family can not get back - a son, daughter, father mother, sister, brother, friend, and that is irredeemable. The acts these criminals have committed is sickening, it wrecks my day especially when I hear of a family killed of a child killed of malnutrition by an abusive parent. "Yes, especially under the Federal Death Penalty act where there is heavy burden placed on the gov to prove their case, and in the Boston Bombing case, there simply is no question to his guilt. Our prisons are filled to the rim with murders, of all degrees. But to premediate mass murder and maiming, targeting the young, families, LE and women - and anyone else in the path of bomb says to me very simply that he does not value his place in society, his own life, nor interested in living among U.S. citizens who he so brazenly targeted to kill. Those bombs could have killed many more. No empirical data arguments should be necessary or used, the only argument is justice, rule of law in society. And the idea that the DP will make him more of martyr to some fail too - who he influences are no consequence, his record is forever known in history. It's no revenge or vengeance, but consequences of ones actions. Whatever one thinks about deterrence, we should also think that there is no room, even in prison, for those that decided to destroy lives at will because he believes it will sent a political message of his beliefs. That is revenge and vengeance; the DP is consequence of such behavior, it does not have to have moral grounds."

They should have 24 hr access to a specially design computer system (indestructible and hack proof) with a massive amount of educational material and things like "Ted Talks".
The death penalty should be applied to hyper-violent crimes even if they don't result in a death. Like a 230 pound, 6 ft 2 inch 16 year old that stomps an 80 year old's face to mush just because they were bored or to get into a gang. For people like that they should dig a 20ft pit, 3ft wide, put lots of lighting and cameras in it along with a fresh air fan so the person doesn't suffocate. Then cut the bottom out of a port-a-potty and place over it. Then invite anyone and everyone to use the potty and put it on a new "Exterminating Vermin" cable channel. The death sentence should be completed in a few days."

I also believe that waiting 10- 20 years to carry out the death sentence is absurd. The defendant should be in a special booth in the court room and when the death sentence is pronounced, the bailiff should walk over to the convicted and shoot him then and there. I also think that the death penalty should be used for MANY violent crimes and not just special circumstance murder. Just being a member of a violent gang should be a death penalty offense."

Staying in jails for many years does not do anything, whereas when they get the death penalty they should get destroyed mentally, emotionally, physically, and get all that abuse that they caused to others, to the community, society, and world. Killing them off will make more space for their to be houses and shelter to the ones who are unfortunate. It gives us the right to take their life away for many reasons, our society and future generations have to fear to go to jail thus making them go in the right and only one direction. This will create the government to become in a economical good status. Plus the majority of the people think that sending them off to jail does not solve nothing, so we must agree with our brothers and sisters that feel that the situation they are in isn't justice. We need help from the people ( relatives of the victim) to help us elect our president; when they need help from us to sentence the criminal we must accomplish it. It must be the same, give back to the community and help stop violence."

Most of the individuals that have done such horrific crimes do not have remorse for the victims or the families of the victims. Our tax dollars are paying for these inmates to sit in jail the rest of their lives and they recieve a hot meal, a roof over their heads and TV's to watch. Think of the victim that does not have a chance for anything because they are no longer here. Most of the inmates on death row now are there for murder, rape or kidnapping (Federal Death Row Prisoners). Think about the victims family that have to live the rest of their lives with the fact that their loved one was murdered. Again, why should inmates that commit murder, rape, or kidnapping continue their lives when the victims are no longer here?"

"Death penalty is a very harsh political choice. But it is not given out unless the judge has very hard information on the case. These evidence could include things such as intentionally killing someone which is something very bad to do. I believe death penalty should be given out to people who deserve it. Someone who has a lot of unreasonable background to why they killed that person or to why they did the crime they are in jail for. Some people say the death penalty could be a revenge, it is the same thing. We are killing someone for killing someone, which somehow could satisfy the family of the person killed. I believe, they might deserve a second chance to live when in this position. But sometimes the reasons behind the case lead the judge to make this decision of giving out the death penalty. People shouldn't kill each other in the first place, regardless of the reasons behind it this is something which could not only end the other persons life but also your own."

"I am pro death penalty but, the crime has got to be heinous in nature meaning a mass murderer should be put down like a rabid dog. The most humane way to do this is by firing squad, less pain and actually costs less than other methods. We need to reestablish laws worthy of the death penalty for example treason would still be worthy of a firing squad but a single murder would not, mass murder does, a single murder should be 50 years with no good time and no early release for any reason."

"Our Justice system is not just at all. It is skewed in favor of money, celebrity, and those who know how to best manipulate it. The death penalty is applied in a whimsical manner. Opponents of the death penalty have caused it to become hyper-expensive and drags out over years. Humane execution is a joke, the convicted ARE BEING EXECUTED there is nothing humane about it. To say that the government does not have to right to take life? What about the Military? This is a Utopian point of view and extraordinarily unrealistic. Treason unless committed by a member of the Armed Forces or an elected official should never be a capital offense. Political winds are fickle. One persons life should not be more valuable than another person. With all of that said there is true evil and there are those who deserve to die for their crimes. Timothy McVeigh is once such individual, Ted Bundy is another."

"More Americans agree with death penalties
    Saves taxpayers money
They will repeat crime, if they escape prison
Most Americans say they deserve it, by the crime they did
    Relieves prison overcrowding
The cost of death, compared to the cost of the person being in prison for life, is cheaper
DNA testing and all the other many methods of modern crime scene science can precisely eliminate almost all uncertainty as to a person's guilt or innocence
It's more humane, imaging living your WHOLE life in jail, without sunlight, would you like that?
Family and friends of the person who died, will have to live with the pain of losing the victim. but they also have to live with the fact that the killer of their loved one, is still alive.
The Bible, the Torah, and the Quran, have occurance that not only that death penalty is being supported, but they largely approve it.
Thirty states had at least one execution, and eleven states had at least thirty executions since 1976.
It takes usually a very long time for a person to be put in the death penalty, sometimes, it takes even 3 decades!"

"When a women or man is committing a crime they are not thinking "Am I going to die after this. Am I going to get caught?". Your thinking about why your going to kill that person, whether it be he threatened me and my family or he took your lollipop. The only problem i have is that everyone wants the other person to die but what happens if or when you kill someone. Are you going to want to die? Are you going to realize that death shouldn't be the answer? Now you more than likely have an incredulous thought in your head or on your face because you don't know the feeling of absolutely knowing you are going to die. Maybe its true some people deserve that fate. Maybe it isn't. Killing them is the simpler and easier choice. Maybe it doesn't matter that now you've stooped to their level. Maybe it doesn't matter that they're family and loved ones will never see them again. They are dead and can't kill anyone anymore. It matters that you had to purge your soul because you wanted this person no longer breathing. Isn't it just better to be empathetic because normally when your choice gets harder you start to realize it the right one. Rotting in prison is worse than death. Why not give them the gift of a nice, cozy cell forever. Thank you."

"The question shouldn't say "Should the death penalty be allowed?" but rather "Should the government be given the power to kill people as punishment for crime?".

The usual phrasing treats the penalty almost as if it applies itself, completely ignoring that someone has to be given the power to decide to apply it. It is my opinion that the government has shown neither the moral integrity nor the competence to determine guilt or innocence and thus such an extreme power as that of lawful executions should not be given to it."

"The death penalty is revenge not justice. The death penalty goes against everything we stand for as a nation. It is cruel and usual, which violates the Eighth Amendment. Those who commit such crimes lack properties that would consider them to be "sane". We all know that a sane person does not murder, therefore, how can we classify these people as being anything less than mentally ill? Also, economically, the death penalty is a tolling sentence. It costs a substantial amount of money to cover the legal fees (majority of convicted are constitutionally provided with a free defense), place them on the death row, and to then carry out the execution with lethal injection (facilities are pricey). Lastly, the death penalty is a hypocritical concept. The death penalty = killing someone who kills to show that killing is wrong."

A person who will go to such lengths to get whatever they seek was not thinking clearly of the consequences or wasn't thinking at all. Doesn't someone murder out of a spurt of anger? Anger has never been a rational emotion. When somebody is angry enough to murder they won't be thinking that they will get killed as well through the death. Basically, someone won't be thinking of the consequence if they are killed immediately. But they will live in eternal pain and regret when they rot away in prison. "The death penalty should be abolished completely. The 8th amendment states that there should be no cruel and unusual punishment. In my opinion murder is extremely cruel and thus the death penalty should be found unconstitutional. But, I know some believe that it is the only way to have justice for the people that these criminals hurt. Life in prison is a punishment much worse than death. These criminals should spend the rest of their lives in confinement thinking about their actions rather than being killed and having no chance to even feel guilty for what they did. Not only is life in prison a better punishment, it is also much less expensive. The death penalty costs $1.26 million for one criminal, while keeping these criminals imprisoned for their entire lives costs $740,000. This money is coming out of the people’s taxes, and on average cost people $90,000 more per year than keeping these criminals in prison. Life in prison is a much better solution than the death penalty for so many reasons."

"@person thanks for replying, now that you mention it, I do have evidence! In our family library we have 3 or 4 autobiographies from murderers with Life imprisonment that feel great remorse for what they did. Most murders are committed by people with mental issues so I don't think they would feel anything about their actions anyways. But it would be worth a try because they have nowhere to go anytime soon you know? I just went to go find one of the autobiographies and it is titled "In For Life" by Jason Richards, great book. Jason received life in prison because during a robbery he and a friend were committing, the resident came home and Jason panicked and shot the resident. In his book he discusses the immense guilt and shame he felt shortly after being given Life in prison and how he has to deal with the guilt until the day of his death. I believe that physical pain is far less hurtful than emotional, mental pain can be. Now that my evidence is out of the way, do you know why you never hear of many murderers feeling remorse for their crimes? because they were put on death row and killed before they had a chance to feel anything. I hope that helps make it seem more valid :)"

"I'm not for taking a life, but I am for changes in the penal system. Murderers should only be housed with other murderers. Many other felonies, like forgery or drug possession, are not violent. Reform should be paramount for these rather than excessive punishment and exposure to violent criminals. I also think "human rights" should be defined specifically for the penal system. I don't think an xbox or a tv is a human right. It should all be about education, reform, and a good work ethic. Find a way to create some form of self-sustaining work within the system to relieve some of the reliance on tax dollars."

"society puts criminals low in acceptance scale. Thinking that only a very evil person would murder, then what does justice do? They murder him back. What do you think? Is that a good roe model for today's children? What does that teach them to do when they are wronged? Murder, that's what, which forces justice to murder again, which repeats the cycle. Stop the death penalty today!"

"You left out some important considerations in your arguments regarding capital punishment.

One important point is what proportion of capital convictions is based primarily on eye witness testimony.

That should be followed by the poor reliability of eye witness testimony, including the difficulty identifying a person of a different race than the witness.

That in turn should be followed by the logical conclusion, that due to the lack of reliability of eye witness testimony, innocent people will unavoidably be sentence to death.

The final conclusion following this line of logic must then be, that even if we conclude that properly administered, capital punishment is morally justified, can it be justified knowing that as a society, we will anavoidably execute some innocent people, in order to be able to kill the truly guilty.

My conclusion is that it is not acceptable to execute a single innocent person, in order to be able to do so to the truly guilty. It is impossible for us to avoid that inevitability."

"When you kill you don't deserved to die, that's why on your grave they put R.I.P, otherwise known as REST IN PEACE, not suffer in jail and feel your punishment. Those who support don't thing about that. What if someone broke into a school, you or your child's, and started shooting and killed you or youre child/children, you would want the killer dead because its your family and you love them and don't think you deserve to be dead, well, what about the killers family, don't you think they still love them? Think about that the next time you say you like the death penalty and you support the death penalty."

Money has brought shame upon us, we think oh I have so called this and next day I spend so called that. The world would be a better place if we all just remember why we kill because the person we are murdering murdered. DeathPenalty=murder. Murder=Prison."
